TAKE TIME MAKE TIME

August 9, 2017

More or less a year ago, on a rainy day, like today, the HOTH (Head of the House) aka The Captain, was surfing Craig’s List looking for dinghies. Which I considered strange considering we’d bought one.

“Come look,” he said, with that lilt in his voice which translates to “I want this.”

“This” was a rigid fiberglass dinghy that looked like a small boat. It had all the bells and whistles but what appealed to me was, wait for it, that solid rigid bottom!

I do not care for inflatables. I’m always expecting to run over something that will poke a hole in the bottom and that Aflac duck will stick his head through and yell “Aflac!”

Anyway, back to that rigid dinghy. We arranged to go and have a look and on arrival were met by the lady owner. Shorts, T-shirt, BB cap, sunglasses, translated into incognito. She took one look at me and said,

“I took your Pilates classes at La Plata Fitness.”

Righty oh. At the time that was over 3 years ago. I considered her a stranger and claimed my hug for the day.

While the Captain inspected the dinghy Donna and I caught up and played “do you remember.” And in my usual “tactful” manner, I asked,

“Donna, are you widowed, single mom (she kept referring to her daughter), or divorced?”

Broad smile. “No,” she said. “I’ve been engaged three times but never made it all the way.”

Ooh. This was a fun woman. I simply had to get all the details, and yes, I have permission to publish!

#1 had a drinking problem. She’d come home from work, look over the garden wall and find all these bottles.  (Color her not impressed….)

#2 was maniac depressive but he did give her a beautiful daughter before she packed and bolted.

#3 was married to his golf. But, in his favor, Donna says they’ve remained good friends.

The ladies in my classes were so much fun. Why didn’t I get to know them better at the time? Oh sure, I was busy, teaching at three different place plus having my own small studio. But still…

Now it’s too late. They are in Maryland. I’m in Florida when I’m home and all over the place, no fixed address, when I’m not.

So where’s the Life Lesson in this?

Make time. If family commitments don’t allow for a gal’s night out, surely a once a month luncheon is doable?

And do it before that phone call that tells you it’s too late. Forever.

That's What Friends Are For

Dionne Warwick

And I never thought I'd feel this way
And as far as I'm concerned
I'm glad I got the chance to say
That I do believe, I love you

And if I should ever go away
Well, then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today
And then if you can remember

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

Well, you came in loving me
And now there's so much more I see
And so by the way
I thank you

Oh and then for the times when we're apart
Well, then close your eyes and know
The words are coming from my heart
And then if you can remember

Keep smiling and keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what…
